Unidentified assailants have vandalized and set fire to the ancestral home of Muhammad Ashraf Ali, the Religious Affairs Secretary of Dhaka South Jubo League. The arson attack took place in the early hours of Monday (August 5) at Ashraf’s village residence in Bakharpur, under Chandpur Sadar Police Station.
According to the victim’s family, the attack caused an estimated financial loss of around Tk 3 million.
“We barely escaped with our lives,” says Ashraf Speaking to the media, Ashraf Ali recounted the terrifying moments of the incident.
“Around 2 a.m., I woke up to the sound of crackling fire. When I rushed outside, I saw flames engulfing the entire house. My family members and I barely managed to escape with our lives,” he said.
Ashraf believes the attack was a premeditated act of political vengeance.
“I have been politically active for years. After the fall of the government, certain local groups, jealous of my popularity, may have orchestrated this attack. I had previously received threats in various forms,” he added.
Tension grips the local area
Following the incident, tension is running high in the Bakharpur area, with locals fearing further violence. Many residents have expressed concern that such politically motivated attacks could spread if swift action is not taken by law enforcement agencies.
No arrests have been made at the time of reporting.
