A violent attack has reportedly taken place on a Jubo League leader in Dhaka. On Thursday (August 7), around 12 a.m., Muhammad Ashraf Ali, Religious Affairs Secretary of Dhaka South Jubo League, was allegedly abducted and brutally assaulted after he went out to buy medicine for his mother.
Ashraf Ali said, “Seven to eight people, including Sujan and Helal, led by Abdul Aziz, former president of Demra Thana Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal leader, arrived at the scene in a microbus with black glass. They suddenly surrounded him and forcibly picked him up in a car. Later, they took him to a house in Jatrabari area and tortured him throughout the night. He suffered serious injuries to his ears, legs and back.
According to him, they spoke to BNP’s central commerce affairs secretary and former MP Salah Uddin and his son, Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP member secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, on the mobile phone. After listening to their conversation, Ashraf was convinced that he had been picked up on the orders of these leaders. Later, the kidnappers threatened Ashraf Ali to quit politics and demanded a ransom of Tk 50 lakh. At one point, when he promised to accept their words, they left Ashraf Ali on the streets of Sarulia in the early hours of the morning.
Locals rescued Ashraf Ali and first took him to Seba Hospital. However, as his condition deteriorated, he was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Doctors confirmed that he bore multiple injury marks, with severe wounds on his hands, chest, and back.
His family claimed that the incident was a planned attack. His brother said, “My brother has been targeted out of political vengeance. He has committed no crime, this happened only because of his role in the Jubo League.”
The family further alleged that despite the attackers’ identities being clear, police have not arrested anyone yet. They demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
BNP has not issued any official reaction to the incident so far. However, internal party sources claimed that the Awami League is politicizing the matter. According to them, the ruling party and the Jubo League are blaming BNP without verifying what actually happened.
Analysts believe this incident could spark fresh political tension amid the already unstable national political climate. In particular, BNP leaders have recently become more aggressive in the capital, and such an attack on a Jubo League leader could further intensify the cycle of political violence.
An official from Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed that they are aware of the incident. He said the allegations are being investigated, and statements from several eyewitnesses have been recorded. However, no arrests have been made so far.
