A sudden heatwave has been sweeping across various regions of Bangladesh since June 7 and is likely to persist through June 10, according to the Meteorological Department. While light rainfall is expected from Wednesday (June 11), experts warn that heatwave conditions may continue in some areas.

In light of the extreme temperatures, the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) has issued a public advisory, emphasizing the health risks associated with temperatures nearing or exceeding 38°C. The organization stresses the importance of checking daily temperatures and taking necessary precautions, especially when such high temperatures persist for more than two days.

Potential Symptoms and Health Risks:

Unbearable heat, excessive thirst, fatigue, and weakness may be experienced. Serious health risks include dehydration, cramps, heat stroke, and waterborne diseases.

High-Risk Groups:

Those working outdoors—such as rickshaw pullers, farmers, and construction workers—alongside pregnant women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and individuals with chronic conditions like heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes are at greater risk.

Warning Signs to Watch For:

Redness in the feet, headache, dizziness, nausea, reduced or discolored urine, lack of sweating, blurred vision, high fever, rapid heartbeat, and abnormal behavior or fainting.

Preventive Measures Recommended:

  • Avoid direct sunlight and cover the head when outside
  • Take frequent breaks in shaded areas during outdoor work
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
  • Drink plenty of clean water and bathe regularly to stay cool
  • Consume light, easily digestible food
  • Avoid stale or oily meals and heavy physical exertion
  • Seek medical advice if feeling unwell
  • Pay special attention to children, the elderly, and those with disabilities

The icddr,b underscores that awareness and timely precautions can significantly reduce health complications during heatwaves.
